25 April - 26 April 2008, Diocesan Day of Prayer

A day to pray together that as the Church in this Diocese we might be: 'mission led, caring, learning, expectant and generous':

The Revd Steve Pittis, Director of Faith Development, said:
"The Bishops are inviting and encouraging every Christian community in the Diocese to join with them on this day in praying for the mission and ministry of the Church and the communities it serves. Bishop Michael, Bishop Trevor, and the Archdeacon of Bournemouth will be visiting and sharing in prayer with a number of churches on the mainland and Bishop Paul will be doing the same in Jersey.

Each parish or Benefice is encouraged to decide on its own pattern for the day and it is expected that there will be a wide variety of approaches and styles expressed across the Diocese. The hope is that every parish church building will be open on the 26th of April to give people opportunity to come and go as they will."

There will be a launch service for the Day of Prayer on Friday evening (25th April) from 8.00-9.00pm in the Cathedral when it is hoped that one or two representatives from each parish will attend.

Resources for the Diocesan Day of prayer

Two booklets have been produced to assist parishes in planning for the Day of Prayer:

The first booklet is a Prayer Guide that includes an introduction by Bishop Michael, some practical ideas of what churches might do on the Day of Prayer and prayer topics focused on the vision for our Diocese to be 'mission led, caring, learning, expectant and generous'. Finally there is a brief anthology of prayers to assist us as we pray.

The second booklet is a Children's, youth and families prayer resource pack with many creative ideas for involving young people. This resource is also being made available to church schools.

These booklets and other prayer resources are available here

Programme:

8pm - 9pm Fri 25 April,  Launch of the Day of Prayer with the Bishops at Winchester Cathedral
9pm - 9am Sat 26 April, Night of prayer at several locations around the Diocese
9am - 9pm Sat 26 April, Prayer throughout the day in parish churches and other local venues

The hope is that every parish and Christian community in the Diocese of Winchester will take part. Resources to help parishes prepare for the Day have been distributed in March and April and also featured in the the April edition of The Vine. If your parish is planning an event for the day or the weekend which could be featured in The Vine or on this website, and so help inspire other Christian communities, email communications@winchester.anglican.org
